Animals of the Bay of Biscay

A local ecosystem

Located between the French and Spanish Atlantic coasts, the Bay of Biscay is a maritime area of exceptional richness. Its waters, influenced by ocean currents, shelter a great diversity of marine species, from small coastal fish to large open-sea predators.

Rich and diverse habitats

Coastal seabeds, covered with algae and seagrass beds, serve as refuges for juvenile fish and crustaceans such as bass, sea bream, and scorpionfish, which move between rocks and marine vegetation.

Rocky reefs offer shelter to congers, moray eels, and other species fond of underwater cavities, while invertebrates and crustaceans like octopuses, lobsters, and starfish play a key role in maintaining the balance of seabeds.

The deep sea and underwater canyons, still little known, harbor creatures adapted to the depths.

As for predators and pelagic species, such as schools of sea bream, they roam the open waters.
